About the Army Body Fat Calculator

This calculator estimates body fat percentage using the US Army's circumference-based formula, which relies on height and neck circumference for both genders, plus waist for males, and waist and hip for females. The results are compared against Army body fat standards by age and gender to determine whether a soldier meets the required fitness threshold.

Formula Used

Male: %BF = 86.010 × log10(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76

Female: %BF = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log10(height) − 78.387

What are the US Army body fat standards?

Army standards vary by age and gender. For males: 17–20 (24%), 21–27 (26%), 28–39 (28%), 40+ (30%). For females: 17–20 (30%), 21–27 (32%), 28–39 (34%), 40+ (36%). Soldiers exceeding these limits may be enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program.

How accurate is the circumference method?

The circumference (tape) method is a field-expedient technique used by the Army for mass screening. While less accurate than DEXA or hydrostatic weighing, it provides a reasonable estimate when performed correctly by a trained professional. Measurements should be taken at the narrowest point of the neck, at the navel for waist, and at the widest point of the hips.
