About the Golf Handicap Calculator

This golf handicap calculator follows the USGA system to compute your Handicap Index and Course Handicap. Enter up to 20 recent scores with each round's course rating and slope rating. The calculator computes differentials, selects the lowest 8 of the last 20, and averages them for your index.

The Formula

Differential = (Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating  |  Handicap Index = avg of lowest 8 of last 20 differentials

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good golf handicap?

A handicap index of 0–5 is considered excellent (scratch to low single-digit), 6–12 is good, 13–20 is average for recreational golfers, and 21+ is typical for beginners. The average male golfer in the US has a handicap around 14–16, while the average female golfer is around 27–28.

What is the difference between Handicap Index and Course Handicap?

Your Handicap Index represents your potential scoring ability and is portable across courses. Your Course Handicap is the Index adjusted for the specific course difficulty: Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par).
