Split the bill and calculate tips per person
The Tip Calculator makes it quick and easy to figure out the right gratuity for any service, whether you're dining out, getting a haircut, or ordering delivery. Simply enter your bill amount, choose a tip percentage (or enter a custom one), and decide how many ways to split the cost.
Tipping customs vary by country and industry. In the United States, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for restaurant service, while other service providers may receive different amounts. This calculator gives you the flexibility to apply any percentage and see exactly what each person owes.
The standard practice is to tip on the pre-tax amount of the bill, as the sales tax goes to the government, not the service provider. However, tipping on the after-tax amount is a generous alternative that slightly increases the gratuity.
Etiquette experts recommend tipping on the full pre-discount bill amount, since the service provided is based on the original price. For example, if a $50 meal is discounted to $40, consider tipping 18–20% of $50, not $40.
This calculator assumes an equal split. If some people want to tip more or less, calculate the total tip separately and have each person contribute their desired amount. You can use this calculator to find a starting point and adjust from there.
For takeout, 10–15% is common, while delivery drivers typically receive 15–20% (more in bad weather or for large orders). Some delivery services include a delivery fee, but that rarely goes to the driver, so tipping separately is still appreciated.
Many restaurants automatically add a gratuity of 18% or 20% for parties of 6 or more. Check your bill for "automatic gratuity" or "service charge." If one has been added, you do not need to add an additional tip unless the service was exceptional.
